The Welfare Activities Committee

This team co-ordinate the spending of the money raised by the club. We respond to need within the community.

From time to time we get direct approaches for help, however we find that those most in need will not ask, for a variety of reasons. To help us find these people we have close links with trusted organisations.

In order to avoid breaching any confidence we make a budget available to Social Services so that can respond rapidly in our name to some of the smaller needs. We do not know the identities of many of the people we help in this way. We simply get a report of how the money has been spent.

We operate a Schools "Link" committee with representatives for most of the schools in the area. We make available "Skills for Life" education packs and finance training for the teachers. We pay for First Aid courses for the children in primary schools. There are projects organised by the Lions to give school children the opportunity to have their say. The Peace Poster Competition and our Essay competition being just two. We present a number of awards for outstanding performance as a memorial to past club members.

In addition we respond to more major requests for help on an individual basis. Often in these cases we dedicate one or more events to such a specific need. We have made donations of several thousand pounds for special equipment for the disabled.

The club operates a service for senior citizens to pay for the supply and fitting of door chains and peep holes. We work with the fire service for them to fit smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

For many years we have organised a Senior Citizens Variety Concert where we book the Melton College Theatre and present local and national acts, inviting local senior citizens for FREE! This has been very successful.

For some years we have been funding and distributing "Message in a Bottle" - a container holding your medical details recognised by the emergency services.
